Lights, Camera, Snap!

Taking pictures of a barn quilt is the most daunting part of my process. I am a horrible picture taker. My daughter, Tiffany, consistently reminds me of this. I don't care which Iphone I have, these never look good. But effort is what it is all about.
Staging a BQ for the perfect picture is as much a struggle as the picture itself. Since moving into my new studio, space is limited and during the winter, it has been harder. I love taking pictures on my deck with the view of Mt Jefferson in the background. It is so ugly in the winter and the winds would have it become a disaster for sure.
I love when I can place a BQ with surroundings that highlight the colors in the BQ. I could usually accomplish this in when in the house. Pictures are important when posting for the purpose of sale but if it is a customer order, it is more about documenting and sharing with other.
No matter how many times I request for a customer to send me a picture of the BQ when they hang it up, they seldom remember to. Since the majority of my pieces leave the area, I can only image how it looks it's final home.
Some of my fellow artists are so good at staging and having the perfect spot to showcase their awesome work. I admit, I am jealous! I am going to work on this dilemma and I have a few ideas tossing around. No matter what I come up with, my picture will be horrible.
I have well over 2800 picture of my BQ.s on file and since I lost count at 3200, it is obvious that I have missed taking pictures of so many. Never fails, I realize it when I go to pull up an image for a customer and I know that I have painted it but can't find the picture. Then it becomes a mental challenge, did I dream it? Good thing I keep strong records of colors and patterns for every customer of their orders. My Icloud is busting at the seams, especially when you consider all the digital images of each one times eight (8).
Anyway, pictures are important and consider the purpose of the picture. If taking for promotion to sell a piece, consider the staging and surrounding. It will help to attract your customer. Be sure to always list the name of the pattern and size when posting and sharing with others. That is important too. We all inspire each other and have the "need to know".
Keep the "Wow, that is stunning" coming! I will do my best to do better at it.
Carry on the addiction!

They are all beautiful but I especially love the last one with the black background. What is that pattern? I have both of your books but they are not with me at this time. You are an inspiration for this new barn quilter for sure.
