That is our first instinct when it comes to removing tape. And how was that for a catchy title....lol. Bet some of those minds went down the wrong road and I try to always give you a little humor.

I was working on this particular BQ and when I took a break and checked emails this morning, I had two messages asking about just this subject. Therefore, while I looked horrible, I had the perfect opportunity to demonstrate a key element of taking tape off.

If you just pull it quickly, like ripping a band-aide off, then you run the risk of peeling paint up with the tape. YIKES! not good to do. I find that I have to be the most careful when pulling tape off after painting red.

When we apply so many coats to get the color saturated, it does leave a heavy edge along the tape. Thicker than other colors. For this reason, using this technique will help to avoid issues.

Enjoy the tip and I will keep it short. Time for touch ups on this Advance Carpenters Wheel.

Carry on the Addiction,

Talara

How long did you wait after you did your white paint base layer(not primer). ( on the advanced carpenter star)

I waited one day and I could not erase my pencil lines! It was a paint and primer white. It just air dried.

Do you ever use a heat gun to remove tape? when tape is on a painted surface? Haven’t tried yet. Just used blow dryer.

We had trouble on a red layer, but have also seen white and navy pull up. Behr or Valspar exterior paint-satin finish.
