Karen Gustin

Located in Versailles, Kentucky

I am a native of the Chicago area and attended school at Colorado State University, majoring in Outdoor Recreation in the College of Forestry and Natural Resources.  A career with the National Park Service took me all over the United States, including Alaska and Guam.  After leaving the NPS, I moved to central Kentucky to  the Lexington area, and lived on a small 25 acre farm with horses, dogs and cats.  I work in non profit equine rescue and am able to combine my love of the outdoors with helping horses that are in crisis find new homes.

Kentucky has a strong agriculture industry and barn quilts are frequently seen on farms along the winding roads of the country-side.  In 2019, I started creating barn quilts that are personalized to the individual and farm.  I love the geometric patterns of quilting and working with clients to choose colors and patterns.  Barn quilts are customized and can be produced as indoor or outdoor quilts, in sizes ranging (in feet) from 1x1 up to 4x4.  They can be displayed on a porch, shed, outbuilding or barn, OR inside over a mantel, in a hallway or in the study.

Barn quilts are created on the more traditional rustic plywood, or MDO - multi density overlay which is plywood which is smooth and finished.  Each piece is sanded, primed, painted and sealed.

When a client contacts me, we discuss types of patterns, size and colors.  I will sketch a drawing of the barn quilt and work with you to finalize.  Once that is done, I can get to work on it, and average completion time is 4-6 weeks depending on workload.  I look forward to speaking and working with you!
