Boys & Math - Who Knew?

How do you figure out a pattern? What is the degree of that angle? How do I begin to draw out this complicated pattern? What does point to point even mean? How many times have you avoided tackling a stunning pattern because the obstacle of drawing it out looks totally overwhelming?

I guess that is the moment that we all wished we had paid attention in math class. I don't know about you but I was much more consumed by being noticed by the boy sitting next to me in class that what was being taught. After all, when that age, a good man in your future was much more important than two plus two. One plus one plus one was much more intriguing than math.

Fast forward in life, boys come and go, husbands long term are rare and men in general are a pain to have around. Do I seem jaded? I am not all all, I just have found life is simpler without one. But I am off on another track, let me get back to math and barn quilts.

Every quilt pattern is a math problem whether you are painting or sewing a quilt. I guess I am so good at figuring any pattern out because I was used to sewing a quilt. Figuring out size of block, break down of pieces, number of blocks, binding and sashing, all to be calculated into how much yardage is needed to make the quilt. Yeah- lots of math!

I now find that figuring out a single block for a BQ is a breeze. But for many, it is not so easy. That is why I published the Barn Quilt Addiction books. I have received nothing but positive feedback and wow, thank you all for the sales. It was never expected to be this successful.

Some patterns are harder than others but I am always up for the challenge and I am here to help anyone figure a pattern out. I am so exciting when someone brings me one that is a really difficult one. I have the one pictured here that I am getting ready to draw out and paint on a 5x5. Can't wait to get started. Calculations are done.

So if you are a teacher, BQ's are a great math project that students will enjoy learning how do calculate and figure out patterns. I have many teachers that are using as class tools. And if you are like me; and wish your attention was on the teacher in geometry class instead of that dreamy boy, you are not alone. I am just thankful I am a child of the calculator age!

My writing and grammar sucks so I must have skipped those classes with a boy!

So make some comments, share your thoughts, let me know if there is a subject or video you'd like to see. I am always here to help and have some laughs, share some stresses with.

Carry on the addiction,

Talara

Oh my! Yes, that pattern does look like a challenge. I would love to see the grid / measurements that are used to figure this one. Thanks Talara
